WELCOME TO PEYOTE

The Small and Mighty Button Cactus of the Americas

Introducing Lophophora williamsii ~

HER.STORY

Peyote grows only in northern Mexico and two small regions of southern Texas, near Laredo. It grows underground, in the form of a stout, tough cactus. Usually, only the crown of the plant is visible, the strong, bitter taste of which keeps it safe from animals.

The size of the plants ranges from golf ball to softball sized. The older ones are larger, but regular users say that the smaller, younger ones are more potent.

The active ingredient that results in the psychedelic journey is mescaline.

The real reason that peyote is so revered and freely grown in Mexico comes from the Native American cultures long time use of it in religious ceremonies. The Native American Church runs a service that utilizes peyote as their main sacrament.

For thousands of years, Native Americans in central and northern Mexico have been ingesting peyote for spiritual purposes. The intended effects of the plant consist of heightened awareness, especially of one’s surroundings and emotions.

It is said to have been discovered by a Huichol/Wixáritari woman. As her people passed from a valley where there was drought, she was in the midst of dying. A voice told her to reach out and feel for what would save her. She felt the cactus. And ate it. And gave it to her entire people.

Needless to say, they felt an elevating Spirit, and she began the peyote tradition we know today.
